THE HYPOCRISY OF ORIGIN: TRUMP, GRANDSON OF AN INMIGRANT, ARCHITECT OF THE WALL

Editorial by Nicolapps, Human Rights Advocate

In a subtle yet powerful diplomatic gesture, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz handed President Donald Trump a copy of his grandfather Frederick Trump’s birth certificate—born in Kallstadt, Germany, in 1869. Though seemingly cordial, the gift served as a pointed reminder of the president’s own immigrant roots: a grandson of immigrants who has built much of his political career on the vilification of other migrants.

Trump’s grandfather emigrated to the United States in search of opportunity, just as millions have done throughout the history of the so-called "land of the free." Yet this legacy of migration seems to have been erased from President Trump’s political conscience, as he spearheaded harsh anti-immigration policies, including travel bans, family separations at the border, and the obsessive construction of a wall.

Merz was clear in highlighting the shared history between both nations: “The United States and Germany share the same DNA. Many American citizens have German ancestors. I gave \[President Trump] a copy of his grandfather’s birth certificate.” This gesture wasn’t just a friendly nod—it was a living history lesson.

The hypocrisy is undeniable. Trump, whose family fortune began thanks to the American Dream embraced by his immigrant grandfather, has become one of the most aggressive faces of exclusionary nationalism. A man who would not even exist in the political sphere were it not for the very migration he now publicly condemns.

In a meeting that addressed serious matters such as the war in Ukraine and global peace, it was this small detail—a weathered piece of paper with a story—that offered the greatest insight: no wall can hide the roots behind a last name, and no speech can erase the immigrant origins of a man who seeks to deny that right to others.

Frederick Trump’s birth certificate no longer belongs solely to the president’s family archives. It is now, undeniably, a political document.
